Episode description

In this episode of Quietly Secure, we explore one of the most useful skills for staying safe in an increasingly connected world: healthy skepticism.

After exploring scams, deepfakes, AI, algorithms, digital reputation and online trust, we ask an important question: should we stop trusting anything? The answer, of course, is no. Instead, we need to learn how to trust thoughtfully.

We look at the difference between skepticism and cynicism, why the sheer speed and volume of online information makes critical thinking harder, and three simple questions that can help us evaluate almost anything we encounter:

Who is telling me this? How do they know? What do they want me to do?

We also explore the importance of evidence, recognising our own biases, and knowing when we simply don’t know enough. Most importantly, we return to one of the key ideas running through Quietly Secure: the pause.

A scammer wants an immediate reaction. An algorithm wants us to keep scrolling. A sensational headline wants a click. But we don’t have to respond immediately.

Pause. Think. Check. Then decide.

Healthy skepticism isn’t about trusting nobody. It’s about asking better questions and making more thoughtful decisions.

And as AI becomes increasingly capable of creating convincing images, voices, videos and conversations, a new question emerges: how do we know who we’re really dealing with?

Next time, we explore identity in an AI world — passwords, biometrics, digital identity, and the challenge of proving who you really are.
